Sa sainteté Mor Ignatios Zakka I Iwas est né en 1932 à Mossoul(Irak).
Il termina ses études secondaires au lycée syrien orthodoxe de Saint Thomas et entra ensuite à l’école théologique de Mor Aphrem à Mossoul en 1946 pour en sortir diplômé en 1954.
Il fut ordonné prêtre et devint moine en 1947. Plus tard, il fit une maîtrise en anglais à l’université de New York et une maîtrise en théologie pastorale au General Theological Seminary de New York.
Il fut ordonné évêque par le patriarche Patriarch Ya`qub III en 1963 et prit alors le nom de Mor Severius Zakka. En 1964, Mor Severius découvrit les restes de Saint Thomas dans le mur du sanctuaire de l’église à Mossoul. En 1969, il devint le métropolite de Bagdad, où il servit comme responsable des études syriaques et membre de l’académie éducative. Il fut également membre du Conseil mondial des églises.
Le 14 Septembre 1980, Mor Severius fut consacré patriarche d’Antioche sous le nom de Mor Ignatius Zakka I, dans un rite officié par le Catholicos de l’est, Mor Baselius Paulos II avec les archevêques du saint synode.
Ignatios Zakka I Iwas est décédé alors qu’il était hospitalisé depuis quelques semaines en Allemagne.
